Those of you who know me remember that I grew up dancing–I have a special place in my heart for amazing dance, whether it’s modern or jazz. Ballet even. Ask my Mom to tell you about me and the Nutcracker ballet. Anyway, thanks to Miss Cellania of stellar blog mental_floss for linking to this lovely medley of movie dances. I recognize most of them. Love em all. Enjoy! ~Jenn
I know I’m late to the game with the LXD. I grew up a dancer, so I do love seeing amazing dance, but the Step Up movies just aren’t my thing, ya know?
HOWEVER. The LXD are on to something revolutionary, I think, not only with this venue, but this way of telling a story. And connecting dance with superhero powers and epic fight scenes? Where do I sign up? (oh yeah, Hulu.)
Watch the trailer. Read the interview. Watch Episode Three (Robot Love Story). I’m breathless right now. ~Jenn
This video by Cirque de Demain (Circus of Tomorrow) found on fb, is really amazing. What is it? It’s a circus act, it’s gymnastics, it’s extreme ballet, it’s a pas de deux…
Actually I do get a bit tired of the sexually-charged-toss-the-female-around thing. I know it’s acceptable from ballet onwards but I’d like to see more of the female doing more than being thrown. Remember that Pilobilus act I linked to awhile back? That’s what I’m saying. Oh, did you see that couple do this sort of thing in last summer’s America’s Got Issues, er, Talent? They had similar size differences, but she did these lifts to her husband that were astonishing!
That being said, this really is awesome. Thanks Ricky! ~Jenn
Tonight at 6pm is the last time I will be teaching NinjaFit at the Boulder Quest Center. It’s been a
NinjaFit obstacle course
lovely journey into fitness with all those folks.
I first designed the NinjaFit class as a cross-training opportunity for especially those martial artists that need to keep up their “fightin’ trim” selves outside of the martial arts classes themselves. I also wanted to design an unusual class that would target whole-body workouts as well as gently teach something about the ninja arts without it being a martial arts class. I wanted also to have one class that could encompass all my various movement expertises into one experience.
Here are some of the many movement conditioning systems that I include in NinjaFit:
ninpo taijutsu and weapons exercises
gymnastics stretching/beginning moves
Pilates
yoga
non-denominational meditation
medicine ball yoga
breath work from Acting School
modern dance
Linklater voice centering
Lessac sit-ups, posture work
Alexander technique
strength conditioning
cardio kickboxing
and…?
I hope any of you lovely lurkers who are local can stop by and sample this fitness smorgasbord–tonight is your last chance!
Again, I must thank stellar blog Boing-Boing for posting this master’s thesis dance piece that uses technology to show fluid dynamics around the dancer. Love this for a few reasons–it’s cool-looking, I get all nostalgic and want to do modern dance again…oh, and the dancer is from SIU, which is where my mom went for dance. What do you think, Mom? ~Jenn
