Zane Lamprey is Edutainment

The Pleepleus gobo. Drink!

Please watch him responsibly, though. If you can. Just don’t drive, okay?

Zane Lamprey is the star of Three Sheets and the upcoming Drinking Made Easy, two TV shows that explore the drinking substances and customs of areas all over the world. Zane and his posse are now touring the US as part of Drinking Made Easy, and they just passed through Boulder and Denver this past week. In fact, the Denver show will be part of the one-hour comedy special coming up on HD TV. Team Bonzuko went to the Boulder show (in the lovely Boulder Theatre) and enjoyed the comedic shenanigans quite a bit.

What was interesting about Zane’s show was the amount of educational material woven into the comedy. Sure, posse member Marc Ryan had some classic funny stand-up revolving aroun ddrinking and also his Southern roots; Steve McKenna’s bit revolved around the cult phenomenon that is his name (just watch an episode of Three Sheets to understand what it means to be so drunk you’re Steve McKenna’d), and also took a lot of inspiration obviously from Steven Wright. And they had a man-sized monkey (Pleepleus) who explained the rules of the drinking game to the already-quaffing crowd.

But when it came to Zane’s turn in the spotlight, it was almost like a, well, like a science and history lecture, but not at all as dreary as that sounds. He played on the audience playing along with the drinking game, and he was really funny, but he also, well, talked about different alcoholic beverages, their properties, their origins, etc. But he was funny! He calls it “dump[ing] information (disguised as jokes) on you!”

Well done Zane and Co. Your Boulder show rocked, and we look forward to seeing your Denver show on the boob tube this fall. In the meantime, Three Sheets is in replays on the Travel Channel–check it out.   ~Bonzuko

This Weekend’s Local Fun

May 21st, 2009 BONZUKO No comments

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, which in Boulder means the Creek Festival, the Bolder Boulder race, and Jenn’s parents’ anniversary. Lots of excuses to party, basically. But then, in Boulder we always welcome any reason to enjoy a microbrew outside. Heck, we don’t even need a reason.

This Weekend’s Events:
Friday: NinjaFit at the Boulder Quest Center, 5:45-6:45pm. Last week, Aimee Heckel from the Daily Camera came in to sample the class and write a story on it. Rumor has it that this Friday there’ll be a photographer to add to her story. Come by if you want to be fit and famous!
Saturday and Sunday: Boulder Creek Festival: see Jenn help out the Boulder Quest Center with some demos on the stage. Shop at artists’ booths and eat good foods.
Monday: The Bolder Boulder: an annual footrace in Boulder. Celebrate by raising a mimosa to the TV footage of our beautiful city. Or, okay, you can walk or run it if you’re local and you want to…

My friend the author

February 24th, 2009 BONZUKO No comments

In graduate school, I had a very good friend named Jason Malott. He was the first person I officially met there, and we were buddies all through my “prose ninja” stint there at Naropa. (The Prose Ninja story is a long one, and not for this post.)

I toast you, Jason M. with a homebrew at your first book deal. I know how good a writer you are, I’m just glad someone else who is in charge of a publishing company agrees with me. Jason’s book will be out in 2009, so look for it, and buy 500 copies, as Emeril would say. After you’ve bought 500 of my book, of course. Kudos, Jason Q. Malott. ~Jenn

Maybe a review will appear here soon. Stay tuned.

Freshman never again

The Freshman Wheat from 2008. Named for Jason’s return to school last Fall, and consumed within a week, we hardly knew ye.

It was one of our first batches. We love the German style wheat any time of the year.

It was so excellent that we have formulated a base recipe from that run which has become the Bonzuko House specialty. The name does not remain the same, however. Jason is deep into year two at MSCD. This is the end of the innocence.

So, we give you … Sophomore Wheat. Creamy and fizzy, powered by Saaz hops this time, and in very short supply. We ran out of bottles too early. The good news is that we saved the runover for gourmet sciences. And cooking with it is damn near as good as drinking it. Really.

As always, if you ty it please let us know what you think!

Mind Your Melon

August 27th, 2008 BONZUKO 1 comment

The Gal-Lager has been popped!

A nice lager character with ever-so-slight bitterness from the Saaz hops, kissed with a fruity finish from the addition of fresh watermelon during a tertiary fermentation.

We are glad to report that it is not too sweet, and the watermelon does not overpower the lager. Since it is real melon, there isn’t that fake-fruit flavor like one gets from commercial brews.

It tastes like a smooth beer, accented with summer goodness.

This is a very limited release, but we plan to work it again in 2009. If you tried it, let us know what you think!
